Cry of Freedom, Plea for Peace — The Civil War in RemembranceMarch 9 and 10, 2013
The melodic power of the combined voices of The Singers’ Club and The Western Reserve Chorale in songs of love, longing and perseverance during a time of Civil War. Local favorites soprano Marian Vogel and baritone Brian Johnson and a lush string orchestra joined the choruses to perform Ralph Vaughn Williams’ moving cantata Dona Nobis Pacem.

The first performance of The Singers' Club was on May 19, 1892, so this final concert of the season marking our 120th birthday is filled with spirit! Under the leadership of the Club's artistic director, Dr. Mel Unger, the Club performs inspiring works ranging from Gounod's deeply spiritual Sanctus to an energetic setting of two spirituals entitled Swingin' with the Saints. Three numbers sparkle with extra energy when more than 60 high school men (who spent the day in a Club-sponsored choral workshop) join the Club on stage under the leadership of Dr. Jeremy Jones, director of the Miami University Glee Club, and Mather Scholarship winner bass-baritone Adam Walton offers a selection of exciting songs.

he audience warmed up on a chilly winter’s evening with The Singers’ Club of Cleveland as they serenaded with favorite melodies like Four Strong Winds, Ox Driver’s Song, Yellow Bird and Let’s Get Away from it All. The engaging Oberlin College Obertones were featured guests and joined the Club to perform McClure’s Kyrie from A Caribbean Mass. Bass-baritone Adam Walton of the Indiana University, The Singers’ Club’s S. Livingston Mather Scholar, rounded out the program.
